Footnote Navigation
You will notice that a few of the earliest essays contain a number of footnotes. I wrote them before I had the bright idea of creating this website. When, years later, it came time to upload them, I found that footnotes do not upload gracefully - but they were too much part of those essays to leave out. So here is the way to deal with them:
The presence of each footnote is identified by the usual convention of a superscript number in the text. These numbers are hyperlinks that will take you to a page that contains all the footnotes for that essay. So, when you see an indication of a footnote, just click it and read the footnote that has that number. To go back to the same place in the essay you were originally reading, click on the return link at the bottom of the footnote page.
